It lacks the necessary power user-features which virtual desktop is for anyways most computer users don’t need virtual desktop , and it lacks polish that it lacks animations on other actions, very static.

Since they first introduced Task View and finalized it on first Windows 10 release, they never bothered to finish things in Task View, despite some wonderful ideas that are useful submitted on Feedback Hub ages ago. Now they are buried somewhere, waiting to be noticed by Microsoft. A nice feature which can be leveraged for using different desktops for official and personal use.

But following limitations are big spoilers. Did they implement the different desktop on start? If not, I think it’s missing that you can save them. I want to add more too: – Ability to rename virtual desktops.

This is super useful for organizing your workflow. Super useful for multi-monitor setup, and moving windows using Task View would be easier and less clunky than the traditional method. We still can’t do this. Dragging the object to Task View button and dropping it to the thumbnail window.

Power user features: – Ability to automatically open an app to specific desktop only power-user feature – Keyboard shortcut to automatically switch to specific virtual desktop Lastly about non-functional thing about Task View is it doesn’t even fully polished in terms of animations. When you click those virtual desktop, there is no exit animation on Task View, which only works when you hover first and click the thumbnail of virtual desktop. There is no animation when you hover those desktop thumbnails too, its all static.

It seems they forgot that one of the aspect that they aim for the Wave 1 of Fluent Design is Motion. Full feature list: Extra customizable keyboard shortcuts to switch or move a window to a different desktop Customizable keyboard shortcuts to pin a window or a program to all desktops Setting a custom wallpaper for each virtual desktop either a picture or a solid color An indicator in the tray area customizable with various icon packs showing the number of the current desktop Assigning custom desktop names to each desktop Fully customizable tooltips showing the desktop name when switching desktops.

Back in Windows 7, I had two user accounts for me. One for work. One for personal usages. That was my multiple desktop solution. Having multiple desktops can be very powerful With Mac, you merely put four fingers on the trackpad and swipe left or right It’s as fast as glancing right or left to look at something The Widows 10 method is far, far slower and requires a total interruption in your flow.

I love Windows 10, but I have found so many uses for the quick multiple desktops, that I’m hesitant. I bought the Surface as soon as I heard Windows 10 had multiple desktops, but the clunkiness made it only occasionally useful. I have heard that there is an aftermarket solution that will put the “quick swipe” into the Windows 10 world. I remember reading on this site I think that the swipe to change desktops is now built into Windows But you have to install a windows 10 compatible touchpad driver first.

Like Apple, only certified touch pads get this feature. All others do not. Go in to the feedback hub and suggest it or if it’s already there upvote it.. In fact I just searched virtual desktop swipe in the Windows Feedback and it came up with suggestioins like that.

This is how they prioritise things.. With the surface or any touchscreen device you can swipe in from the left side of the screen to bring up the desktop view. It only opens the Task View, not switch to another virtual desktop directly. If you want speed try using the keyboard shortcuts. Some 3rd party manufacturers added this with their touchpad drivers.

But good news!!!! It’s coming to all windows with precision trackpads in the anniversary update in a couple days!! Been running the preview and it works fantastic. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android. Exclamation first if it’s just a statement in disbelief. So maybe the marks are off I could be wrong. I use it allot during work. The most productive way is to use it with the keyboard shortcuts. I think it’s nice to have this option but I’ve yet to find a usage scenario for it.

I run a 3 monitor setup and it works great on Windows 10, much better than in 8. But I’ve never had a need to have a different layer of windows open. What do people use this for? I’m curious. I think it’s less useful when you have 3 monitors, because those are actual different desktop’s.

I use it a lot at school when on one or two monitor setup for programming although we use Linux, but that distribution has essentially the same feature. Select Multitasking and scroll down until you see the heading Virtual desktops. Here are two options that are easy to understand:. Multiple desktops aren’t for everybody, but if you’re having trouble keeping your programs organized in one workspace, try creating two, three, or four in Windows When you visit this site, it may store or retrieve information on your browser, mostly in the form of cookies.

I say that from what I have read, and my personal testing of the system. You can test it yourself by sending a shortcut to the desktop. It sends it to all. Delete it from Desktop 3, and all shortcuts are gone from all desktops. A simple way to demonstrate this is to create a recycle bin shortcut on virtual desktop three.

It is now on all three desktops. Go to desktop 2 and delete it there, and it is now gone from all three. Like you, I wanted to use different desktops for different desktop folder usages. Can’t do it. Multiple desktops is nothing more than a virtualized multiple monitor configuration, without the benefit of isolating desktop icons to a specific monitor.

Can you either let us know how to have “Different Desktop Icons” on multiple virtual desktops or lets us know why this is not a feature. I am in agreement with the OP.

The ” idea ” behind Windows 10 multiple desktops, and how it has been explained, is like having multiple desks in an office.

Well that’s exactly what I need!!! Presently in our den, we have two desks with two computers. On the other desk are all the items related to games, crafts, design, etc. I don’t mix the paperwork between the two and when I am sitting at one desk, I do not have the items from the other desk cluttering my work’s space or view.

Now in Windows 10, I was hoping to use it like they say I just upgraded to windows 10 last night. This morning, as I was moving all the icons back the way I had had them organized before Windows decided to clutter them all to the left of my screen, I discovered “multiple desktops” with the “task view”. Unbelievable that I can’t do this. I have no use for a second desktop that doesn’t function like an actual second desk I can’t figure out why Microsoft didn’t provide this functionality.

Logging in under another user’s account might solve this problem, but that is NOT how we want to manage our computers. We do not want entirely separate accounts, we just want our “clutter” to be organized in a logical way. I didn’t like the immensely time-consuming and draining headaches associated with managing “multiple accounts” with MS OSs. We don’t have “privileges” issues in our household and basically it’s a “privileges” nightmare using multiple accounts.

As is accessing and installing programs, customization, maintenance, etc. For me, managing ONE account is most efficient for the way our family to use the computer. That leaves “personal files and shortcuts” clutter as our only remaining headache. My previous use of 3rd party apps which help with such things also created a maintenance nightmare for me.

I’d rather it all be in one system and that’s what I thought “task view” was going to be. Even for just my files and needs, separate from my son’s, I was excited to keep system maintenance activities, shortcuts, and files separate on it’s own desktop view, as well as my other tasks and activities on their own desktop views, as well as my son’s.

Right now, it just operates like a browser when you want to open other unrelated searches in another tab or window. I request you to give your feedback using Feedback app. By the way, I typed “feedback” on Search and there were NO onscreen instructions. You have not been helpful at all. Rather, you have been dismissive, passed the buck, whatever you want to call it, and we are all getting tired of that by Microsoft.

You’re obviously having difficulty so you’re whining about it. In fact, if you go to the search bar and type “feedback”, you will get a link to the Windows Feedback app.

There is nothing wrong with him recommending that you use this app; it is very handy and simple to use and will allow you to provide input on any Windows feature.

Now, to address your issue with multiple desktops: I can understand the frustration, however, if you have ever used any of nearly a dozen virtual desktop programs from third party developers, you will know that all of them behave exactly this way. This may be annoying, but it’s simply how they all work. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Hello everyone I recently upgrade my system to windows 10 and most interesting feature which I like in this OS is its multiple desktop or virtual desktops.

I want to know how to add different shortcuts in different desktops. I searched a lot about this online but didn’t find the right answer. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question You can use Flip to switch between open windows.

To do this, press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard, then press the Tab key. Continue pressing the Tab key until the desired window is selected. The Task view feature is similar to Flip, but it works a bit differently.

To open Task view, click the Task view button near the bottom-left corner of the taskbar. All of your open windows will appear, and you can click to choose any window you want. Instead of keeping everything open on the same desktop, you can move some of your windows to a virtual desktop to get them out of the way. This feature wasn’t available in previous versions of Windows, and it’s especially helpful for managing a lot of windows at the same time.

To create a new desktop, open Task view , then select New desktop near the bottom-right corner. Once you’ve created multiple desktops, you can use Task view to switch between them. You can also move windows between desktops. To do this, open Task view, then click and drag a window to the desired desktop.

To close a virtual desktop , open Task view and click the X in the upper-right corner of any desktop you want to close. If you have a lot of windows open at the same time, it can be difficult to see the desktop.
